Let's network

Well, here we are 4 challenges in and FINALLY I have a subject that I know at least a little about. I already have a facebook account, and have knowledge of myspace. I find it a great place to catch up with friends and family that I don't get to see very often, either because we live so far away from each other, or we work totally different hours and find it hard to catch up face-to-face.

My library service has a facebook page for staff members, and it is a bit of a shock to see how many of us are on facebook. We don't have a lot on the page, but with the amalgamation the group has grown more and more.

Our Library service has also got a MySpace page dedicated to one Mash It Up film festival. Here we have used the page to post updates about what going on, it has a link to register into the film festival and sign up for workshops. With Mash It Up being for people aged 12-26 we have found this page to be used a lot, most of this age group are constantly on the Internet and it is a lot easier to connect with the whole group through this site than by other methods. Here they can also network a group to produce a film together. We have staff members that oversee this site to make sure the content is relevant and that no one has added anything inappropriate.

I think facebook and pages like this are a way of the future for libraries, with most people not having the time to stop into the library for a long time or as often it would be great for libraries to update people through these tools that obviously they are using already.
