Optional adventure

Okay well I'm game, even though the RSS feeds frustrated me to tears, I decided I'm up to the challenge. Surprisingly I found this task to be EASIER than the first part. I attached a 'quotes' feed onto my blog as easy as 1,2,3. I did check to make sure it was there, and I think if you look on the left hand side of the screen, there should be 5 people names with links to quotes.

YAY for Kylie!!!!

I also have had a little squiz at some other peoples blogs, and have realised, much to my relief, I am not the only person that was tearing my hair out. I also am still amazed how we are all doing the same task and how every ones blogs are so different. Not just the layout, but even what we've written and how we attacked each new task. Nice to see so much variety within the library staff :)

RSS

Well all, I officially HATE rss feeds. I struggled the whole way through this weeks task. First I tried to get on the OPAL training to sign up for the feed, and couldn't even find what I was supposed to click on. I have finally muddled y way through everything and have 5 RSS feeds on my bloglines page. I chose a variety of different subjects and just pick a few that interested me. Cooking, Dilbert, OPAL, quotes of the day, and some sort of news feed were my selections.

I can see these RSS feeds becoming more and more popular, and to be honest when I first watched the tutorial, I was very impressed. I'll see how I go as to if I use it n the future. I have put a recipe feed on there, so maybe I will keep checking in just for some inspiration on what to have for dinner.

This would however be a great tool for the library, we could have feeds linked right onto the home page of our catalogue for upcoming books, reviews and pretty much anything our patrons would ever need. I also think it would be better used on a library page because, patrons don't have to set anything up themselves.

Let's network

Well, here we are 4 challenges in and FINALLY I have a subject that I know at least a little about. I already have a facebook account, and have knowledge of myspace. I find it a great place to catch up with friends and family that I don't get to see very often, either because we live so far away from each other, or we work totally different hours and find it hard to catch up face-to-face.

My library service has a facebook page for staff members, and it is a bit of a shock to see how many of us are on facebook. We don't have a lot on the page, but with the amalgamation the group has grown more and more.

Our Library service has also got a MySpace page dedicated to one Mash It Up film festival. Here we have used the page to post updates about what going on, it has a link to register into the film festival and sign up for workshops. With Mash It Up being for people aged 12-26 we have found this page to be used a lot, most of this age group are constantly on the Internet and it is a lot easier to connect with the whole group through this site than by other methods. Here they can also network a group to produce a film together. We have staff members that oversee this site to make sure the content is relevant and that no one has added anything inappropriate.

I think facebook and pages like this are a way of the future for libraries, with most people not having the time to stop into the library for a long time or as often it would be great for libraries to update people through these tools that obviously they are using already.

Wiki is weird

Okay so here I am at week three, and am still learning new things every time I log on the the licence 2 test drive. I am finding it easier every week to understand what I actually need to write about on this blog.

Anyway onto my Wiki experience. To be honest I have wasted A LOT of time today looking at all the different sites and links that were on the page. I did read a few wiki pages that I was a little dubious about the information and how true it was, but I have used wikipedia at home and in general have found it to be a useful tool to find information I need. I think this form of information is always going to be more up-to-date and thus more relevant as it can change it's information easily (rather than having to re-print a whole book). The information today article raised many good points and was a interesting read.

I looked at a few of the wiki links that were provided. I looked at: Possible next generation catalogues, wookieepedia, LIS wiki, Library Success: A best practice wiki. I found some more interesting than others.

The wookieepedia, although is not a site I would use (as I really don't like Star Wars) was the one I liked the best. I really liked the layout and think if this is a topic you enjoy it has EVERYTHING you would want to know and more. A lot of effort has gone into this wiki.

I think a wiki would work into public libraries very easily. I think it would be great place to create a 'whats coming to the library' or 'about our library' pages. I also think it would be able to be used a a staff tool as well as a public tool.

My interesting photo

Well here is the interesting image I have decided to use. Growing up with cows in the paddock has made me love cows and I really think this photo is cute. They cow obviously is very tame and enjoys peoples company. Which is better than any of our cows were, they ran at the first sight of humans. I love how when you look at this beautful cow you almost know what it is thinking. it has readable eyes.

The caption that this photo had on it said that the camera was licked more than once while the photos were being taken and that the cows repeatedly fogged up the lens. You can also see in the background there is another person taking the same sort of photo of another cow.

Flickr Fun

Well another new task for me this week. I have heard lots and lots about Flickr but have never actually had a look at this site. I am amazed at how many people take such lovely photos. There are photos of everything you could ever think of there. I found the site really easy to use, and was able to search tags and groups with ease. I also really liked the "recently uploaded" feature that was on the front page. it really shows how popular this site is when there were 5145 uploads in a minute.

I had a quick look at the Mosman library photos and really loved the photo of the I love ML badges. It wsa simple but a effective photo. It was also interesting to see the theatre make-up photos as we have just run a workshop for the same thing, and have photos of the same things.
Having a look at the library groups it was a wonderful place to get ideas for displays ideas and maybe how to set them up and what works.

Well thought I should get into the practice of getting on here and blogging. So here I am.

This week has been filled with my workmates asking about the licence 2 test Drive, as I am the first person here that has registered. Most of the questions were along the lines of is it hard to do? and how long did it take you?

I must admit I did find it a little overwhelming to see how many links I would have to follow, but once I started reading the blog properly I realised it's all a matter of personal preference and also the time I have available does limit the amount I can search and look at some of these links.

Today I have also started "following" another blog, and uploaded a photo onto my profile. So three cheers for me!!!
